Today, on August 1, 2007, the official events devoted to the 40th anniversary of the first production output of OJSC “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” took place in Nizhnekamsk. Mintimer Shaimiev, President of Tatarstan, attended the events. The gas-turbine power plant and the second line of halobutyl rubber separation process (Welding-2) were put into operation at the Company which is a part of TAIF GROUP. Besides, a bitumen plant was commissioned at OJSC «TAIF-NK».
Cogeneration gas-turbine plant GTU-75
OJSC “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” is the heaviest user of energy and utilities among the industrial enterprises of Tatarstan. It consumes 11.5% of the electrical power and 33% of the heat energy generated by the entire “Tatenergo” system. According to the Targeted Energy Saving Program of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Company has developed and approved for implementation an Energy Consumption and Saving Program 2000-2005 and an Energy-Saving Program 2006-2010. OJSC “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” was the first among the industrial enterprises of Tatarstan to have the energy audit carried out by the Republican Centre of Energy Saving Technologies in 2000-2001. The second energy audit conducted in 2005-2006 helped to assess the Company’s efficiency in energy consumption as well as its energy saving potential. The auditing results made the basis for the Energy Saving Program 2006-2010. In line with the 2000-2005 Program, the Company introduced 517 energy saving implementations totaling economic effect of RUB 973m. The measures reduced a utilities share in the marketable product cost from 23.3% to 15.5%. The new Energy Saving Program contemplates for 111 basic energy-saving implementations at the Company to yield economic effect of RUB 757m.
In July 2006, OJSC “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” and other major energy consuming companies of the Zakamsky industrial zone in conjunction with OJSC “Tatenergo” developed a “2007-2010 Plan for Organizational and Engineering Measures to Increase Reliability in Energy Supply and to Reduce Blackout Risks”. Accordingly, OJSC “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” will have to materialize 11 implementations amounting to RUB 800m. One of the implementations is the construction of an in-house power supplier based on gas-turbine unit GTU-75. In September 2004, for the purposes of the project, LLC “Neftekhimenergo” was established by OJSC “Nizhnekamskneftekhim”, OJSC “Tatenergo” and PSC “TAIF”.
The GTU-75 unit is a state-of-the-art power plant with a combined cycle to produce electric power and steam integrated into the Nizhnekamsk Central Heat and Power Plant flow chart. The unit will provide electric power supply of 595m kW/h and of heat power of 902th Gcal annually to cover 25% of the OJSC “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” needs in electric power and 10% in heat power. The GTU-75 payback period is 4 years.
“Welding-2” second halobutyl rubber finishing line
OJSC “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” is the first and the only producer of halobutyl rubbers in Russia. The Company’s mix of chlor- and brombutylrubbers is equal to the halobutyl rubber range of “Exxon” (USA) and “Bayer” (Germany) companies. A flexible flowchart enables the adjustment of a product list depending on the market opportunities. The process fully complies with the up-to-date levels of engineering and technology, industrial and environmental safety.

Halobutyl rubber is applied in tyre industry to manufacture tubless tyre liners, as the halobutyl-based rubber has the enhanced gas tightness, higher rupture strength and is resistant to repeated strain. Modified butyl rubber is applied to manufacture conveyer belts, exploited in hostile environment and at higher temperatures. Furthermore, it finds application for manufacturing medical-purpose items. 95% of produced halobutyl rubber is exported.
Nizhnekamskneftekhim was awarded the gold medal of “Chemistry 2005” and “Tires & Rubber” international exhibitions for the quality of its chlor- and brombutyl rubbers in 2005, 2006. “Welding” is a multipurpose line designed to produce and dry butyl and halobutyl rubber with a high degree of automation and mechanization of all processes. The decision to erect “Welding 2” was taken by the NKNK Management in December 2004 after the halobutyl rubber, which the Company started to produce in April 2004, secured its position in the world market.
In January 2005, a Protocol was signed to purchase a second finishing line; in November, the civil and erection works commenced at the site; and on 16 December 2006, the pre-commissioning operations were completed and the line was commissioned. With “Welding 2” put in operation, the halobutyl production volumes are expected to double at the Company.
Bitumen Plant
The demand for bitumen is in direct proportion to the volumes of construction, primarily of road engineering. President Vladimir Putin said in his Message to the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation that an insufficient and ineffective transportation system and road facilities resulted in annual losses of the Russian Federation of over 3% of gross domestic product (GDP). The President proposed approving the State Program of the Road System Development of the Russian Federation till 2015. According to President Putin, building of high-quality federal roads and reconstruction of highways was the absolute priority, as they were forming international transportation North-South and Centre-Urals corridors in the European part of Russia, as well as in directions providing realization of economic potential of the Far East and Siberia. Absolutely all the above federal roads construction projects shall pass through the Tatarstan territory forming a favorable transit corridor connecting the South and the North, the West and the East.

In this connection, the commissioning of a Bitumen Unit at OJSC “TAIF-NK” to support the implementation of the road facilities projects was a well-timed and an essential event. The Unit produces oxidized road bitumen of high quality complying with the international standards including European standards, as well, based on Bituroks process.

The quality of the bitumen produced complies with GOST 22245-90 “Viscous petroleum road bitumen” standards and EN 12591 European Bitumen Standards. The bitumen quality characteristics such as brittleness, elasticity and melting point are much higher than the established normal values and are higher than that of bitumen of other producers. The first line of the top capacity of 145 th t/y was put into operation with the second line to be commissioned in half a year totaling the annual bitumen production to 300 th t/y.

The Bitumen Unit was designed by OJSC “Neftekhimproject” (Kazan). “Porner”, the Austrian company, was in charge of the basic and detailed design of the reconstruction, as well as of installation and erection of Bituroks equipment. The process is very flexible in using feedstock and producing goods providing bitumen complying with various standards. The TAIF-NK bitumen is in demand in the USA, the Middle East, the Far East, the Eastern Europe and the CIS.
